Ravensara is an evergreen plant that can grow up to a height of 20 meters. Its leaves are elliptical, its bottom is supported by buttress roots and it has a fragrant red bark. The fruit is a spherical, fleshy drupe, which turns from dark blue to black when mature. With lush leaves, it likes to grow in humid and sunny areas such as tropical rain forests in South America and Asia.

Ravensara originated from Madagascar. For the indigenous people of Madagascar, the rowan leaf is regarded as a member of the Lauraceae family. In Malagasy, ravensara means fragrant leaf.
