Cypress grows in the Mediterranean region, Cyprus, Italy and Iran. It is an evergreen coniferous tree that can grow up to 35 meters high. It has a cone-shaped tree shape with needle-shaped leaves that bloom. Small flowers with brown-gray fruits. Because of its tall and thin features, the cypress is nicknamed the Pencil Pine. Cypress has a long life, some can survive up to 1,000 years. Its Latin scientific name "sempervirens" means evergreen.

Due to its evergreen and longevity characteristics, it was first used in making sarcophagi in ancient Egypt. In ancient Greece, cypress was dedicated to Hades, the god of hell. Therefore, it is regarded as Pluto, the god of the underworld in Greek mythology. The sacred tree represents eternal life and comfort. Since then, cypress can be seen in cemeteries across the Mediterranean, as a symbol of grief and a source of comfort. In ancient times, cypress was used as a purifying incense.
