Patchouli is a lush perennial herb that can reach up to one meter in height. Soft oval leaves, white with purple flowers. Native to Southeast Asia, it now grows wild in Sumatra and Java, at altitudes between 900 and 1,800 meters.

The popular name of patchouli essential oil is derived from the Hindustani word pacholi. In the 19th century, it was used to diffuse Indian cloth and shawls. It was popular with the British Empire because cloth and silk from India were scented with patchouli and were transported to avoid insects. Essential oils that have been extracted for a longer period of time are more popular than newly extracted essential oils.
